The Second Match

Characters: Roxas, Axel, Spectators
Location: The Coliseum.
Time: Two days after Weber's announcement.
Summary: The second of the death matches.
Warnings: Character death warning.

When the arena cleared, the man rose from his seat to again address the Coliseum. His smile was untouched, undisturbed by what it had seen. He made no apologies. "For a fairer fight, friendship. Axel," a twist of irony in the smile at the name, "in the red corner. Roxas in, oh, the yellow? Or it will all be fire, and this will be red and gold."

The sand drained up through the hourglass as he spoke. When it had all slipped through to the top, it held its place, waiting patiently for the start, still defying gravity.

"Good luck."

But gravity won out, and the sand began its descent.

Gene briefly wondered if the wanker's little card could have healed him without the pain, but the thought was cut off prematurely by a wave of excruciating fire wrapping around his ankle. It didn't last long and he was scrambling to his feet a moment later, glaring through the barrier. The bastard still wasn't looking at him.

"Oi! Open up!"

Oh but Gene hated that smirk.

"It wasn't a request." The click of his gun coming out of its holster was loud in his ears and he didn't care, aiming it toward Weber's head. "We need to talk."

Gene didn't bother listening. He tilted the gun and shot just above Weber's head, the bullet ricocheting back, whizzing past the Guv's head into the stands behind him. He didn't blink.

"I said we need to talk."

Weber's refusal to give Gene said look didn't stop the Guv from giving the fruit something similar. "Why not come out here and find out?"

"I'm not looking to die."

Gene snorted. "It got your attention. Now get out here and talk to me like a man, you bloody poof."

If Weber thought he was being witty, he was sorely mistaken. Gene continued to give him an even, cold look, but at least he holstered his gun. "It gets the job done. And it's better than sitting on my arse and letting you muck about with people's lives. They aren't here for your bloody entertainment."

"Not until you put an end to this."

"And what's the bloody point?" Gene roared, doing his best to kick the barrier down. "Why do you need 'em all dead, you sodding bastard?!"

Gene spent the next several minutes yelling at the barrier in futility before kicking it again out of frustration when it was obvious Weber was no longer paying attention. The Guv didn't have much choice but to eventually turn and storm away. He'd figure something out before the next matches. He had to.
