Of realities and siblings
Characters: Agent North Dakota (
betrayedtwin) and Agent York (
decrypts)
Location: In the mansion
Time: A couple days after York chats with South (post-cursed items sale), but before North receives his own item.
Summary: The topic of the differing realities comes up, as well as the lasting consequences it has had on the Plane-going Freelancers.
Warnings: None.
[A pleasant, sweet smell tinged with vanilla drifts in the air and can be smelled the moment anyone enters a certain part of the mansion, but keep going and soon the sounds of sizzling can be heard coming from the mansion's kitchen, immediately followed by the unmistakeable scent of bacon. North's in there humming softly to himself as he waits to flip the bacon over. He's definitely making more food than he'll actually eat, if the pile of waffles and slab of uncooked bacon is any indication. He has been making extra food whenever he cooks for a while now, and he just leaves it in the fridge for anyone who may want it. (And he secretly hopes his sister's been finding it, but he never asks.)
It seems like one of those mornings when a nice breakfast is in order. Might also have to do with how breakfast in the mess hall didn't exactly smell appetizing either--or maybe it was the coffee--but there he is all the same. He's got a spare pair of clothes set aside in the bedroom he claimed so he doesn't go back smelling of good food.
Deftly, he flips the bacon with a pair of tongs, careful not to splash too much grease around. Once that's done, he walks over to the coffee pot and clicks it on. The machine's ancient, but it does the job--even if he forgets to start it up when he should since it takes much longer to percolate than the ones on the Mother of Invention. He wonders if one of those will turn up on the Plane or in someone else's reality; if it hasn't already, that is. Maybe Mu will end up with it like some of the training equipment.
At times, the reality differences still takes some getting used to. And even though things are better than they were between him and South, it's still not where they used to be. It's something of a whiplash coming from his reality and his South to the Plane and his South here. At times, it still bothers him, but he doesn't let it show, not in front of her. And the others know something about how he's not from their reality, but only somewhat. (Though he suspects Wash knows a lot more than he lets on. If there's one thing to be said about him, it's that he can dig for information and keep quiet about it.) He just hasn't talked about it too much, but he knows he should. He can't imagine what it may be like for them, and really...they're all he's got to share in this madness that is the Plane. No one back home will get it, and the last thing he wants to do is put his own position in the project in jeopardy if people start to think he's cracking under the pressure.
Well, maybe that's why he's spending more mornings making breakfast on the Plane. Better chance of running across his friends on the Plane. Besides, he's supposed to be hearing from Jacob sometime soon about something that'll help mend things between South and him, or maybe make the differences in realities easier to handle. He's not too sure just what could help with that, but he's learned that on the Plane, a lot of things are possible.
He gives the ancient coffee machine a pat as if that'd encourage it to work faster, then he wanders back over to the stove and the pan of bacon sizzling away.]
