Indeed, being good gave one a lot of leeway not to be nice. How could he justify sending Dorothy off when the answer was right on her feet? It wasn't nice, but the Witch had to be stopped, and Dorothy couldn't get home if she didn't appreciate its value.

Oh, and at his age, sometimes things just slipped his mind.

"And I hope you won't surprise any more witches. It isn't very nice to give kind old ladies a shock." Because they might be inclined to shock you right back.

Jade had his own way of looking out for his 'friends.'
